Reach OutI grew up in Lakewood, Colorado, with the breathtaking Rockies as my backdrop, fostering an early love for exploration and connection. My journey has since taken me across continents and cultures. I began my professional life in Mozambique as a Peace Corps volunteer, immersing myself in a world of service and learning. From there, I moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where I taught English and Theater, igniting a passion for storytelling and creative expression.
This passion carried me halfway across the world to Chengdu and Shanghai, China, where I taught English and eventually became the Language Learning Director. These experiences deepened my understanding of education's transformative power and the importance of cultural exchange. Returning to Colorado, I continued teaching in Aurora, nurturing a love for theater that soon led me to the Episcopal Day School of St. Matthew. There, I transitioned from teaching theater to becoming the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, combining my creative and educational expertise with a commitment to fostering inclusive spaces.
Currently, I serve as the Director of Equity and Learning for the California Association of Independent Schools. Additionally, I am the Board Chair for Chrysalis Academy, a school dedicated to supporting LGBTQIA+ middle schoolers, where I work to ensure a safe, affirming, and inclusive environment for all students. Since 2007, I have been deeply involved with SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Inclusion), including four years on the National SEED staff. I am also proud to contribute as the Vice Chair of the Board of Northern California PoCIS and a board member of Canamac Productions, a platform dedicated to equity and learning.
My work is driven by a passion for understanding the positionality and politics of the spaces I enter, fostering just relationships, and creating pathways for meaningful belonging. I live in San Mateo, California, with my husband and our 18-year-old twins. Life here is full of laughter, learning, and connection—a perfect foundation for engaging with communities and schools looking to evolve and thrive.
A grocery store parking lot sparks reflection on bias, identity, and societal structures. The pandemic has increased the demand for DEIJ work in schools while also making it harder to implement. Video conferencing has improved accessibility but also exposed systemic inequities. Schools must move beyond treating DEIJ as optional, especially those committed to inclusivity. Even in small moments, like sitting in a parking lot, there’s much to learn.
